Why do people use tobacco?
There are many reasons why people use tobacco; there is always a starting point of where someone started smoking. Everyone has different reasons why they started; there are 4 main reasons why most people started smoking tobacco. Does any of these reasons seem familiar to you?
Parental Influence
This perhaps one of the popular causes of when teenagers start smoking. If they have parents that smoke then chances are they will smoke as well. In fact research shows that teenagers of parents who smoke are two times as likely to start smoking. Children that are often exposed to second hand smoking become addicted to it without even taking one puff of a cigarette and over time comes to chance to try it and that is how it begins with just one puff.
Peer Pressure
This may be a potential tie wit parental influence, but once there is a friend who starts smoking the another one starts and so on increase the chance that your teen will start smoking as well. It is the peer pressure of friends who encourage their friends to try it and often times it will take more prodding by friends but eventually in an effort to fit in and not be the only one of their friends not to smoke your teen will give in as well. When teenagers start smoking it is from the pressure of smoking in order to look cool and they will continue to smoke for the same reason, they do not understand the addictiveness of nicotine until it is too late.
Weight Control
There are many adults that really believe that smoking will help them from eating when they are on a diet. They are just trading in one vice for another. When they lose weight they are encouraged by doctors and friends that smoking is bad and now that the weight loss is done they can stop smoking but in their minds if they stop smoking then they will gain weight. In some cases that are true and that is one reason why smokers do not want to quit no matter the reason of how they got started.
Self-Calming
Many people really believe that if they smoke a cigarette they can actually calm their nerves. When the body has a craving for nicotine the body is already addicted to it serves the purpose and that is all it does, it doesn't calm you down physically, and it is more a mental belief than a physical one. Experts says that teenagers that smoke more than a pack a day can actually increase panic disorders and even episodes of panic well into adulthood. Adults who stopped smoking for a period of about 2 weeks had lower levels of anxiety.
Whether it is one of these reasons or not as to why you started smoking and it can be the underlying symptom of something more. Perhaps trying more exercises and more calming techniques like reading a book or watching your favorite movie will replace the need for the tobacco and this will be beneficial in so many ways especially when it comes to your health.
